Batenburg initiates delivery of 200 transformer substations to Liander

Batenburg Energietechniek will install 200 transformer substations in the electricity grid of network operator Liander over the next four years. The first one has already been placed in Azewijn, Gelderland (see video), and the second one will be installed in the neighboring Netterden this week.

Transformer substations are essential for the safe and reliable supply and return of electricity to businesses and homes. The network operator utilizes these substations to prepare the local grid for the future. Check out the video below for more details about this project:

Working on the energy transition is more urgent than ever. The demand for electricity is rapidly increasing, along with the supply of solar and wind energy. Liander, in collaboration with various contractors and suppliers, is diligently expanding and reinforcing the electricity grid to meet the needs of consumers and businesses. Thanks to the contract with Batenburg Energietechniek, Liander will receive transformer substations over the next four years, connecting two types of medium-voltage networks.

In areas where the electricity grid has reached its maximum capacity, such as in the Achterhoek region, businesses cannot expand, and consumers cannot feed their solar energy back into the grid until it is expanded. Batenburg's transformer substations will help create more capacity on the grid, allowing consumers and businesses to meet their electricity demands.

Record pace

Liander's service area (North Holland, part of South Holland, Flevoland, Friesland, and Gelderland) requires more transformer substations due to the growing economy and the digitization of society, leading to an explosive increase in electricity demand from consumers and businesses. Additionally, the Netherlands is rapidly building houses, transitioning away from natural gas, and embracing sustainable energy production. These developments result in a significant surge in electricity demand and the need for additional capacity on the electricity grid for transmission. Net operators are facing an unprecedented challenge and are diligently working on building the energy grid of the future. Over the coming years, Liander will install thousands of new transformer substations, construct dozens of new large electricity stations, and lay thousands of kilometers of additional cables to meet the electricity demand of consumers and businesses.

*These 200 DR substations consist of a 20/10 kV housing, 6 MVA transformer, 10 kV switchgear, 20 kV switchgear, and DA- and security cabinets on both sides. They occupy a maximum of 15 square meters with a height of approximately three meters.
